At Shaker Pointe at Carondelet, it’s the residents who make our community so special—and sometimes, their companions, too.

For our resident Laura, that companion is her rabbit, Boop V (yes, the Fifth!).

Laura’s rabbit carries on a charming legacy, and like his predecessors, he’s brought joy and curiosity into her life. But as Laura is quick to point out, rabbits aren’t just adorable; they’re also deeply rewarding pets, especially for adults.

When people think about pets in senior living communities, dogs and cats often come to mind first. Conversely, many people associate rabbits with childhood or Easter baskets. But as Laura’s experience shows, rabbits are far from “kid pets.” They thrive in calm, attentive environments and often bond closely with their owners. Rabbits can recognize voices, learn routines, and even be litter-trained, making them well-suited for indoor living.

“They’re smarter than people think,” Laura says. “And they each have their own personality.” Boop V is no exception.

Unlike more demanding pets, rabbits bring a quieter kind of companionship ideal for older adults looking for low-maintenance pets. They don’t need to be walked, and their care routines can fit comfortably into daily life. They do, of course, require gentle care: they need space to move, safe areas to explore, and enrichment to stay happy. With the right setup, they can live full, engaging lives indoors and form strong bonds with their humans.

For Laura, that bond is unmistakable. “Boop has his favorite spots, his routines, and his moods,” she shares. “He lets you know exactly how he’s feeling.”
